What did the lemon say to the lime? Sour (how are) you doing?

Why did the lemon cross the road? He wanted to play squash

Why did the lemon stop halfway across the road? He ran out of juice

What do you give an injured lemon? Lemon-aid

Why did the man get fired from the Orange Juice factory? He wasn't concentrating

Why do citrus fruits wear suntan lotion? Because they peel

What do you get when you cross a brontosaurus with a lime? A dino-sour

What do you get when you cross a cat and a grapefruit? A sour puss

“Scratch” means making something from raw ingredients. Instead of making our cake from a box, we’re cooking it from individual raw ingredients like flour, egg, baking soda, sugar, and milk! Plus, we’re adding our own citrus flavorings to give our cakes extra pizazz!

Citrus is now in season and in all its glory, and given the colorful array you can find at the markets now, we thought it’d be playful to have our Sticky Fingers Cooking students explore adding different citrus flavors to cake batter.  Kids may or may not realize how popular it still is to make cake from a box, and that cake mix was born out of a need to feed people during the Great Depression.

Convenience is now the #1 reason for companies to develop their own version of a boxed cake, and it wasn’t long before boxed cake became an enterprise all its own. And isn’t it a welcomed convenience in a pinch when you find out your kid needs 2 dozen cupcakes to bring to school the next day and it’s 9pm when they tell you they do?! We can enjoy so many foods conveniently that used to take a lot of time (and still do) to make from scratch. Thankfully, these homemade cake takes no time at all and only requires a few more ingredients. Have fun in the kitchen with this recipe! Spring is coming. Can you feel it??
