NOVEMBER 2019: A COOLINARY CONFIDENCE CLASS
KID-INNOVATED TOTALLY TASTY TOSTADAS + SPEEDY SKILLET “REFRIED” BEANS + MEXICAN CHILI LIMEADE
We get super excited to cook from Mexico, especially this time of year when spicy, flavorful food tastes so good up against chillier temperatures. Inspired dishes from Mexico are great for our COOL-inary Confidence classes because there are countless ways to make salsas, tacos, nachos, and this week: TOSTADAS. Most kids are familiar with these dishes, though they may not realize just how many different ways there are to adapt the recipes. We got *amazing* feedback from our students and our chef instrctors in each city when we made Sweet and Savory Salsas last month. Your kids just loved the variety of colors, textures, and flavors that they created in our Sticky Fingers Cooking classes!
This week, we are suggesting a list of ingredients for you and your family to chop and choose - everyone will each top their tostadas with homemade refried beans, and the rest of the toppings are up to them! Encourage your children to choose at least 3 toppings for a variety of taste and nutrition. Remind your children that the more colorful their plates, the better they are for their growing brains and bodies. Eating the rainbow can be more fun when kids get to have a say in the matter. Kids can choose to break up their Tostada into smaller chips, cut their finished Tostada into triangles, layer their pieces with toppings, or keep them whole. Encourage them to get creative and have a blast this week "traveling" to Mexico from your own kitchens!
