Optimize Your Immune System… With Food!

With all the contagious illness that circulates this time of year (let alone during a global pandemic), it’s natural to wonder what role food and nutrition play in keeping us healthy. According to experts, there is no way to “supercharge” your immune system. However, you can optimize it by making sure to get all the vitamins and minerals you need to keep your body healthy. 

This is good news! This means that unless you’re managing a nutritional deficiency, there’s no need to hyper-focus on specific foods or nutrients. Instead, just aim for a diverse diet that includes plenty of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. 

There’s no need to overthink it. As journalist and author Michael Pollan famously recommended, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” When you eat this way, you are automatically getting all the good nutrients your body needs to maintain your immune system’s peak performance. 

So… gather up your family and eat that rainbow! Upgrade your weeknight dinner with a simple salad or vegetable side! Enlist your kids to help make confetti fried rice, jewel stew, or Clan Kitchen’s bright vegetable soup (thanks, Beatriz!) For dessert, serve slices of seasonal fruit alongside squares of dark chocolate! These are easy ways to fill your plates with the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber that keep your immune systems humming.
