Cooking Up Connections: An Interview with Chef Janet and her Chef-in-Training Addy!

July 3, 2024 by Emily Moore
  • Why did the student bring a ladder to class? Because they wanted to go to high school!
  • Why did the student eat their homework in cooking class? Because the teacher said it was a piece of cake!

I recently caught up with longtime Chef Janet and rising 6th grader Addy. Addy participated in 7 cooking class sessions between 2021 and 2024 she and Chef Janet have enjoyed 43 classes together! They were kind enough to make time to speak to me in May – the busiest of all months – on the eve of Addy’s continuation ceremony (congratulations, Addy!). I asked them both to dish about their experiences as chef instructor and student at Sticky Fingers Cooking.

[Following is a condensed version of the full interview, lightly edited for clarity and brevity.]

HOW DID YOU EACH GET STARTED WITH STICKY FINGERS COOKING?

Addy: I think I started in third grade, just when they started up clubs again after COVID. I was nervous at first, but the older kids helped me feel comfortable. Now, as a fifth grader, I help the younger kids understand the recipes and see their reactions to the food.

Chef Janet: I moved here in 2018 and was looking for a job. I filled out my application on a Sunday, got a call on Monday, and was hired. I’ve been impressed with the company, Erin, and everyone I’ve worked with from the very beginning. I love the concept of promoting healthy eating to children. I’m passionate about it, and it helps me get the kids excited about it too.

WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE JOINING US?

Addy: Before taking Sticky Fingers Cooking classes I would sometimes help my Dad in the kitchen because he makes a lot of food from scratch.

Chef Janet: I was an interior designer. When I moved to Colorado, I decided to switch careers and go to art school. I now sell my art and participate in art shows during the summer. Working with Sticky Fingers Cooking is a perfect complement to my artistic pursuits.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STICKY FINGERS COOKING RECIPE?

Addy: My favorite was an artichoke sandwich. We found the recipe on the Sticky Fingers Cooking website and made it at home.

Chef Janet: I use Sticky Fingers Cooking recipes all the time. I try to incorporate them into my weekly meals. If I like a recipe, I’ll make it again. It’s a great way to keep trying new things, especially the healthier options.

ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT TAKING A CLASS WITH STICKY FINGERS COOKING OR BECOMING A CHEF INSTRUCTOR?

Addy: The cooking classes are a great experience. The instructors are really nice and help you feel comfortable, especially if you’re nervous at first. I did love all the meals even when there were some that I didn’t enjoy as much as others, it was still good to try them because sometimes they were from different countries and it’s just nice to try something that you’ve never tried.

Chef Janet: People often ask me about my job, and I always mention how rewarding it is to teach healthy cooking. I’ve told Addy that this would be a great job for her when she’s in college and she’d be perfect at it – she’s already getting practice now by helping other kids in the classroom.

Interviewer: It’s been great talking with both of you. Janet, Addy, thank you for sharing your experiences. I wish you both the best as you continue your culinary adventures and other activities.

Addy: Thank you!

Chef Janet: Thank you. I’m going to miss Addy as she moves on!
