How to Host an Apple Tasting Party

October 30, 2024 by Emily Moore

Fall is peak season for apples which makes it the perfect time to host an apple tasting party! Besides being a low-pressure way to encourage kids to try something new, an apple taste test is a fun way to promote healthy eating and sneak in a little math!

First, some FUN a-peel-ing FACTS about apples!
  • Apples come in all shades of red, green, and yellow.
  • Most apples are still picked by hand.
  • It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider!
  • More than 2,500 varieties are grown in the United States!

Ready, Set, Go!

1. Start by getting a variety of apples. (Kids love to help with this part!) 5 different types will be plenty, but choose as many as you like - Honey Crisp, McIntosh, Gala, Red/Golden Delicious, Opal, Granny Smith. (You may find this apple varieties guide handy.)

2. Next cut the apples into bite sized pieces  and put each variety on a separate plate. (Be sure to label them so you know which is which!) Here’s our helping cutting guide!

3. Have kids sample the first apple. Think about taste, tartness, and texture. Use tallies to mark if they like it or not (one mark if they like it, two marks if they LOVE it).

4. Repeat step 3 for each kind of apple.

5. After everyone has had a chance to taste all the apples, have kids pick their favorite and give that one a third tally mark. You’ll end up with a simple tally graph of everyone’s favorites.

6. What was the winner??

When you’re done, take those tally graphs and turn them into an APPLE PIE CHART!
