Lucky Foods for the Lunar New Year: Celebrate the Year of the Snake!

January 29, 2025 by Emily Moore
  • What do you call a funny snake? Hissssssterical.
  • How do snakes weigh themselves? With their scales!

The Lunar New Year 2025 kicks off on January 29, welcoming the Year of the Snake! The festival lasts two weeks, and is a time for family, fireworks, dragon dances, and, of course, delicious lucky foods. Traditional dishes are highly symbolic and believed to summon happiness, wealth, and prosperity for the year ahead.

Bring good fortune to your table this Lunar New Year with these auspicious foods:

Longevity Noodles

Symbolism: Long life and good health.
Long (and uncut!) noodles represent a long, happy life. The longer the noodle, the better your luck! Tradition says that for maximum fortune you must eat your noodles in one long slurrrrppp! (Well, if we must!)
For the yummiest, slurpiest noodles, try our chewy Shanghai Stir-Fried Chunky Noodles + Sautéed Bok Choy!

Dumplings + Spring Rolls

Symbolism: Wealth and prosperity.

Shaped like gold bars, dumplings and spring rolls are symbols of wealth. The more dumplings you eat, the richer you’ll be in the new year!

Dumplings are also a great hands-on activity for little chefs who love to help in the kitchen. Let your kids pick the fillings, wrap, and roll to their hearts’ delight!

Bring prosperity to your plate with: "Gung Hay Fat Choy" New Year Potstickers and Kid-Invented Fresh Vegetable Spring Rolls!

Citrus Delights

Symbolism: Wealth and abundance.

To double your luck, fill your table with tangerines and mandarins  – symbols of gold and prosperity. For the luckiest vibe, choose fruits with their stems and leaves intact, as they represent growth and vitality.
Bonus: It’s peak citrus season, so these fruits are at their juiciest and require zero prep. Snack away!

Got extra citrus fruit? Try: Citrus Quenchers

Almond Cookies

Symbolism: Harmony and unity.

Did you save room for dessert? Round, bite-sized almond cookies are a tasty fixture of the Lunar New Year table. Their roundness symbolizes harmony and togetherness, making them an ideal dessert to share with loved ones.

Here’s to a lucky and delicious year of the snake!
